Città

Città

The beautiful city on the banks of the river, which bears the same name, is known for its many flowers and plants, even at international level. According to the old local traditions, the city supported Lucca first, before it finally passed to Florence, where the city gained a considerable importance under the Government of the Medici. The Porta fiorentina, a spectacular triumphal arch, which has been erected for Giangastone dè Medici in 1732, leads to the ancient part of the cathedral, which got transformed in Baroque style at the end of the seventeenth century. In the gothic church of San Francesco from the Thirteenth century, you can admire a valuable picture of Bonaventura Berlinghieri (1235), which is dedicated to the small oratory of the Thirteenth century. Also an interesting attraction is the Palace of Vicars (the current city hall), which has been built between the 13th and the 14th century and the elegant oratory Madonna di Piè di Piazza from the Renaissance.

Pinocchio Park

Pinocchio Park

Near the Villa Garzoni is the modern Pinocchio Park an imitation for the little ones, of the famous doll of Collodi, the writer, whose family was from the neighbouring village, from which he took his name of art. The inauguration of the Parco di Pinocchio, a collection of creations by great artists, was celebrated in 1956. The park is not a place of fun, but rather a place of cultural activity, constantly renewed but without forgetting its roots: Performance of puppets and exhibitions of art works, which are inspired by the story of Pinocchio. During the years, the park got enriched with many art works, among them: L’Osteria del Gambero Rosso art work by Giovanni Michelacci, inaugurated in1963, Il paese dei Balocchi, designed by Marco Zanuso and Pietro Porcinai, with 21 sculptures in bronze by Pietro Consagra, which figures the history of Pinocchio.
