La fortezza di Volterra

The Etruscan settlement of Velathri was an important trading centre and remained so under the Romans, who renamed it Volaterrae. A long period of conflict with Florence started in the 12th century and ended when the Medici took possession of the city in the 15th century. Perched high on a rocky plateau, the town’s well preserved medieval ramparts give Volterra a forbidding air. For a very long time the city has had a strong alabaster industry.
