Basilica of St. Francis

Basilica di San Francesco

The Basilica of St. Francis (Basilica of San Francesco) is located on the western end of the Umbrian town Assisi, on a slope of Mount Subasio. The fact, that many executions took place there, gave to him the name Hell Hill (Colle d’inferno) . In commemoration of Jesus Christ who also died in an execution site outside Jerusalem. In 1226, when St. Francis died, first his coffin got appointed in the church of San Giorgio, until July 1228, the year of his canonization by Pope Gregory IX and the beginning of the construction of the basilica. In 1756, the church, as one of the seven most senior catholic churches, got its name major basilica.
