ROME

ROME

Rome is situated on the banks of the Tiber. According to Varro’s calculation, Rome was founded on April 21. 753 B.C. Rome was first governed by Kings (753-510 B.C.); then as a Republic by Consuls (510-30) and finally by Emperors (30 B.C. to 476 A.D.). During the Middle Ages, the Church established its temporal rule and Rome remained the seat of the Papal Court until September 20, 1870 when the Italian army entered Rome and the Eternal City became the capital of a united Italy. Rome has a population of over three millions. Once sacred to the Romans and the destination of the triumphal processions of victorious generals, the Capitoline Hill is today the headquarters of the mayor and municipality of Rome. In spite of changing events and historic conditions, it has remained at the very center Roman life. It is reached by the great flight of steps known as the “Cordonata”, built according to designs by Michelangelo for the triumphial entry of the Emperor Charles V in 1536. At the top of the stairs are the colossal Discuri, two sculpture groups from the late Imperial period, which were found near the Jewish Ghetto and placed here in 1583 by Pope Gregory XIII. Pope Sixtus V added the Trophies of Marius – barbarian weapons from Emperor Domitian’s time - and the statues of Constantine and his son Constantine Caesar, brought here in 1635 from the Baths of Constantine.
